In our last house, we had plenty of room for all of our books, but in this house space is limited. The chillin' corner of the studio provided a perfect place to house and display our favorite volumes and some fun collectables. However, we first had to pare down the sheer number of books we've (I've) been hoarding! Don't get me wrong, Hubby does like to read, but I have always been the big reader/book hoarder. I also become very attached to books like they are a part of my family. I know, I'm weird... :-) Let me give you an idea of how much books mean to me: For our anniversary one year, Hubby hunted down an original copy of one of my favorite books from childhood, The Doll of Lilac Valley... I must have cried for 45 minutes when I opened that present! Yeah, he's a keeper... I swear I checked that book out of my school library almost every week! I still can't believe he found a copy! For the library corner of the studio, I had to be very ruthless in cutting down the books we had collected. It was not easy for me! It took a week of healthy sorting and soul searching, but now we are down to this: That little bookcase in the corner holds a surprising amount of books! It is just a cheap little bookcase from Target that has served us well over the years. It has been a vanity, a night stand and a bookcase. Not that you can tell, but some of those shelves are 2 books deep! Ha! The above pic to the left is the top of the bookcase. It holds my Tolkien volumes and an incredible piece of sculpture by my Uncle. He reminded me of the Ents in Lord of the Rings, so he fits in perfectly! Yes, I am a total nerd... On the right are two views of the larger wall shelves. So sad that my Douglas Adams collection is done. He was a great satirical writer, may he rest in peace. Of course, the Harry Potter books deserved their own shelf! Our friend gifted the handsome, carved onyx head to my husband. He's just cool and is vaguely reminiscent of Voldemort, no? On the right, are just a few of my Dune books. Naturally, no one will ever write like Frank Herbert, but his son and Kevin J. Anderson did an honorable job of rounding out the Dune universe. The butterflies were purchased in Key West on my 30th birthday. I have also been creating shadow boxes for each of our trips for many years. We are up to 7 and I still have not done one for Italy! There isn't much wall space left in this house, so perhaps the scrapbook will have to suffice. ;-) Thanks for letting me share our cozy little library corner!
Peace, Love and Books! Cheers! M J

This time of year is ripe with events in our area as you may have noticed. This weekend was the annual Oyster Fest. We had beautiful weather and had a great time despite the distinct lack of fried oysters. Seriously, how do you run out of oysters at an Oyster Fest?? Oh well! Our friend did manage to snag some oyster fritters, but we all had a hankerin' for some fried oysters. The day's saving grace was the Chesapeake Bay Retriever Demonstrations. Those dogs are so smart! The Maritime Museum is a wonderful venue for events and the views aren't too shabby either! We were having such a great time watching the doggie demonstrations (and heckling the time keeper - Ha!), I just had to snap the oh-so-obligatory selfie... Yikes! My face is huge in this pic and man are our wrinkles showing! ;-) Although the event didn't live up to its usual awesomeness this year, we are still glad we went and enjoyed ourselves...
As you grow older, you'll find that the only things you regret are the things you didn't do. -Zachary Scott I hope you had a wonderful weekend with no regrets! Cheers! M J Halloween is on a Friday this year peeps! Yay! Our friend is having a Halloween party and we are going all out with creepy decorations and grossly-themed foods. Since this party is going to be so awesome, we had to come up with great costumes we've never done before. Grim Reaper and Ugly Witch? Check. Cowboy and Native American Princess? Check. Venetian couple with gorgeous masks? Check. Hubby the cheerleader and me the lacrosse player? Hilarious Double Check. What really caught my eye this year was the beauty of the sugar skull from the Dia de los Muertos, Mexican celebration. Day of the Dead is the celebration of those who have passed and is an essential part of the Mexican embracement of death as a natural part of life. Here is a sneak peek of our headdress for the evening: Man, did I have fun with the glue gun, or what?? ;-) I picked up the spider tulle at Joann Fabrics, the top hat at the Spirit Halloween store and the black leaves/skulls/skeleton hands at Ben Franklin. The rest of the stuff I had in my craft stash. My headdress is simply a comfy headband I already had with lots of stuff hot glued onto it. I can't wait to show you how it looks with my entire costume, so fun! Hubby's cheap top hat got some hot glue lovin' as well. His words - "That is one pimpin' hat!!" Hehe... We have our costumes all figured out. Now I just have to decide how our skull faces will be painted for Halloween. Hmmmm... :-)
Happy Friday!! Cheers! M J I warned you previously that I would dig out some old pictures of projects we tackled in our first house. Well, today is the day! We're going way back to 1997 ya'll! (You'll have to bear with me on some of these pics, NOT digital and only scanned.) It was August 1997. We were 25 years old. We were getting married in less than 2 months. Sooooo, why not buy a 50 plus year old fixer upper that had been vacant for almost 2 years?? What a GREAT idea! (Sarcasm is one of my best friends, by the way...) Here is the only photo of the bathroom I could find from when we bought the house: Isn't it glorious?? The brass doors WITH frosted stripes, the rotting window in the shower, the rotting particle board vanity, the speckled tile ON EVERY SURFACE! It was the bathroom dreams are made of! I told you I loved sarcasm... ;-) Now, jump in the remodeling time machine and flash forward to February 2007. Yes, that is correct. We lived with this bathroom for almost 10 years. However, within the first year, we did remove the horrible shower doors, paint, replace the toilet & sink, and install glass block in the window. Here is what we truly lived with before we tore it all out: It was workable. And when I say that, I mean the sink, toilet and tub all worked... :-) The fateful day finally came in February of 2007 and Hubby was all too excited to start swinging the sledge hammer: Safety first my peeps! LOL! Here is the demolition progress: I couldn't decide if I liked the bathroom better before or after demolition! Ha! Notice the newer studs and drywall above? We closed in the closet of the back bedroom years before in anticipation of increasing this bathroom's footprint. How many years you may ask?? Well, here is what we found written on one of the newer studs: FIVE years to the day people! We are nothing if not patient... We switched the tub and toilet locations which was a fun time. 50 year old cast iron plumbing is super fun to work with, don't ya know! We also stole some space from one of the hall closets, installed all new drywall, tub & surround, toilet, sink, lighting, cabinetry, towel drying rack and vinyl. It was a lot of work, but that first bath I took was the most rewarding ever! Here is the finished product: So much better than those ugly brass shower doors, am I right? Below is the new tub location with the heated towel drying rack. Seriously, if you can install one of these puppies, it is a luxury you will never want to be without... The sink was one from Ikea that we mounted onto an Ikea, egg shaped table top that we cut down to size. Hubby also recessed the surface mount medicine cabinet into the wall seamlessly... Now, I know many people sneer at the thought of vinyl flooring. But honestly, after 10 years of moldy, disgusting grout to clean, there was no way I was dealing with it again. Today's vinyl products can be pretty beautiful, not to mention warmer on the feet... I hope you have enjoyed this edition of Remodeling Time Machine! It is actually pretty fun to go back and peruse our past projects. Maybe next time I will avail you of the absolute joys of installing a sewage ejector in a concrete basement floor! There may or may not have been many "F-words" uttered during that project... :-)
Hope you are having a great week! Cheers! M J Have you ever been to the Jack Russell Races?? Cutest. Thing. Ever. We went out to experience this hilarious event on Sunday. It was a chilly morning, but the sun was shining and we got to see the most adorably confused doggie races ever... At least this little guy was going in the right direction! Ha! I could not catch a good picture of the actual Jack Russells, they were just too fast! It was doggie watching heaven, however... Below is the new brew puppy, Barley, an adorable St. Bernard! He was so chill and loved being around all the kids and other dogs. He was in a race, but he just wanted to sniff all the other doggies! Too cute! Below is Maggie, our neighbor's Bernese Mountain dog. She is a total lover! She also won the big dog race! Go Maggie, Go! I think the funniest thing we saw was this chihuahua with the headless horseman riding him... There are no words: ;-) Being out with friends and enjoying the day was so refreshing! It truly reminded me to work on letting future goals go for a while and to enjoy my time in the moment.
In between goals is a thing called life, that has to be lived and enjoyed. -Sid Caesar I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Cheers! M J Well, this October has pretty much gotten away from me! I am usually all decorated for fall by October 1st. Not this year! Just too much going on with other projects and living life. Since it is so close to Halloween, I only did the bare minimum of decorating on Friday. It took me all of 15 minutes to do... Above is the front door and decor next to the door. I wove a few fall items in with our usual decor. Below are a few shots of the kitchen and dining room... Of course, Raven had to photobomb me multiple times! He's always ready for a photo op... This shot cracks me up! I think Raven gets jealous of the "other" cat in the front window... Below is the mantle with a painting by my Uncle. They are the cat serpents from my Cherokee heritage and I think they are so beautiful! They also happen to work quite well with fall decor... Below are a few vignettes from the living room. Just adding a few fall items here and there made this a quick and easy job... Love the skull vase! I scored him at a shop in town. After Halloween, I think he will be holding some succulents and moving to the studio for good! Most of the decor can stay after Halloween, it will just be a matter of storing away the Halloween specific items and leaving the rest until it is time to decorate for Christmas. Urgh. Did I just say that?? Sooooo not ready... Raven's approval was absolutely necessary - He hasn't knocked the fake kitty off the window sill yet! I guess that is approval in its simplest form... ;-)
I hope you are all enjoying your weekend! Happy Fall! Cheers! M J Hi you guys! It’s been a busy week around here, but I did manage to finally finish the studio closet labeling today. If you will recall, the studio closet is also Raven’s kitty convenience station: Before laying the flooring in the studio, we painted the inside of the closet a pretty aqua, installed shelving standards for storage and added an LED strip light. Man, does this closet hold A LOT of stuff! Check it out... This closet even allowed me to rescue my trusty sewing machine from its dreary life in a storage crate (which was a pain to get to when I needed to use her!). I've had this baby since my 18th birthday (thanks Mom & Dad!)... Most of the Ikea storage boxes we’ve had for ages, but I added four large boxes since we were increasing our storage space. The khaki boxes are just some cheap magazine files and an old box that I covered with fabric from the thrift store. Gotta love the hot glue gun! As you can see above, I had just hand written the labels with my calligraphy pen until I was able to actually print labels. I re-printed all of the labels onto some aqua scrapbook paper to coordinate with the lovely wall color and voila! An organized storage area and private kitty station all in one small closet! Now, if the Hubby or Niece ever ask me where something is, I can just say, "It's in the studio closet, read the labels...". ;-) Hehe...
Happy Friday Everyone!! Cheers! M J I am such a lucky gal! Hubby surprised me with an anniversary sailboat cruise on the river and it could not have been more beautiful... How fun to do something we have never done before! The weather cooperated and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves with great company and beautiful scenery. After the cruise, we had a lovely dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in town. I mean, check out this gorgeous plate of food people! Beef short ribs and an Argentinian Malbec?? Yes please! :-) Of course, it was way too much food, but our Niece got to enjoy the leftovers... All in all, we had a wonderful anniversary and we know that the best is yet to come!
There are two ways to face the future. One way is with apprehension - the other is with anticipation. -Jim Rohn Well, I anticipate we will all have a great week! Cheers! M J The living room and hallway had this strange, multi–color speckled and multi-textured carpet when we bought this house. It wasn’t as bad as the ugly pink nightmare that was in the studio, but it created more dust than it was worth. The only plus for this carpet was that Raven loved zooming through the house since he could get GREAT leverage with those back claws of his… Ahhh, life with cats… Here is a shot of the living room before: And a shot of the hallway before: Not so terrible, right? Ok, I couldn’t resist! I caught Raven peeking out of our bedroom wondering, “What the hell happened to my awesome carpet?? @#!&^%!! You people suck…”. Hahahaha… Yeah, he’ll live…FYI, his nosey self got tackifier all over his paws at one point and I had to clean him up before he started licking that stuff off… And any other time he would be sleeping ALL DAMN DAY… Urgh! I love my cat, I love my cat… :-) This is the hallway sans carpet (and staples – so many staples): This is in the living room where Hubby had to patch a few uneven spots in the subfloor before laying the flooring. Of course, the first row of planks took the longest again. Lots and lots of cuts and letting the tackifier dry to the proper “tack”. Below is a closer shot of the carpet. It’s like an impressionist painting – from far away everything looks great, but close up, it’s a big ole’ mess… It took us a few days to do, but it is our 17th wedding anniversary this weekend and Hubby took 3 days off so we could work on the flooring together. Aawww, just like old times! (Rolls eyes dramatically…) We are also celebrating 26 years together, much of that working on DIY projects hand-in-hand. I’ll pull some pictures from the archives and give some history someday. It’s amazing we haven’t killed each other yet! Ha! Below are a few photos of the finished product taken with my anniversary present, a new DSLR camera! Enjoy! What a difference this floor makes! The room feels cleaner and brighter. Oh, and I am hoping the dust will be much less without that fuzzy carpet shedding on a daily basis. Raven is going through carpet withdraw right now, but he will get over it. Hey, he did live with slippery laminate for years in the other house! The biggest plus is the ease of cleaning. This Karndean flooring is so tough, it’s mostly used in commercial applications such as hospitals. If this stuff can survive a hospital, it should be able to handle a hairball or two…
From Hubby, Raven and I, we hope you are having a great weekend! Cheers! M J I wanted the wall next to the window to have a pleasant gallery wall that complimented the room design. Unfortunately, none of the old artwork and frames we already had went with the room at all. Cue the spray paint, acrylics and Silhouette machine! This is the view you have walking into the studio: The first piece I worked on was the painting in the center. We had this old frame with a masonite backing that worked perfectly! Only problem was the orangy wood finish. I sprayed it gold and let it dry outside while I set up my easel and got my paint on! I just mixed acrylic paint colors to coordinate with the colors in the room and started brushing on the paint in an abstract pattern – no plan or thought, just going with what my eye liked. After I got my colors on the board, I felt it needed something, so a few black graphics made it complete: The other frames were also sitting in the attic with the rest of the extra stuff from our last house. Sidebar: I never realized how hard it would be to downsize to a smaller house until I had to do it. After spending 13 plus years renovating, decorating and furnishing our first house, it was tough letting go of so many things. But they were just “things” after all, right? Believe me, you get over it! I grew up listening to the Beatles and Let It Be is a beautiful song and message. For the Let It Be picture, I just cut the letters out of some floral scrapbook paper with my Silhouette and stuck them to a dark grey paper backing. The black frame already had the pre-cut, triptych mat. The other two frames were the right size, so one got gold spray paint and the other just needed a good cleaning. They are just some pretty scrapbook papers that I liked. For the white frame, I cut out the “Love” in the same dark grey paper… By the way, how do you photograph reflective items the correct way?? I've read up on this and cannot seem to make anything work! Oh well, I guess I will learn at some point... Here is that little gallery wall in one shot: I love the flow, colors and sentiments - just looking at it makes me happy!
My Mom-in-law has already claimed the painting as her own. I guess I will need to get to work on a Christmas present for her before I come into the studio one day after she visits and find this one missing... :-) I hope you are having a great day! Cheers! M J |
